24. How to Get Your Board on Board

1. BLUF

  • If you have a board, you want it to be effective.

  • Too often there is a lack of engagement or clarity.

  • Enter the 3 As - Align, Articulate, and Arm.

2. The 3 As

Whether you’re a small, medium, or large business or a non-profit, if you have a board, then you want it to be effective.

I’ve served as a Board Director and led numerous board development strategies.

Too often there is a lack of engagement or clarity.

Enter the 3 As to help your board effectively engage & advocate for your company’s future.

  • Align Skills – Be intentional about who you bring on and align their skills & interests with your needs. Is it funding? Strategic direction? Legal advice? Create a matrix of desired skillsets, roles, and experiences and proactively align towards them.

  • Articulate the Ask – What is the time commitment & the ask? Too often, directors onboard without understanding what they’re signing up for. It is 9 meetings per year, a financial commitment, and advocating within their network? Whatever the ask, be clear up front.

  • Arm with Info – Board members are busy and often serve on other boards. Give them a 30-second summary to effectively advocate. Then arm them with deeper info to access, as needed.

3. Application

So, what does it look like for your business?

  • How can your board be more effective?

  • Which “A” is the hardest to implement?

  • What is one thing you can do today to drive greater clarity?

I help small technology and professional services businesses scale and grow.

If you want to break through to the next level in your business, drop me a message, and we'll arrange a 15-min call to see if I can help.

To your success,

~Susan
